Experiment No. 43 – Psychic Awakening
According to Rosicrucian Order AMORC, a rigorous study of the teachings and theories within these monographs combined with consistent observance of certain ritual practices should enable a student to project physically to far-flung destinations of their choosing. At these locations, the student should be able to “see” or “hear” as if they were actually present in body. At advanced levels, one should even be capable of transmitting telepathic messages or lending their spiritual energies towards healing the physically sick.
Key to unlocking these supernatural gifts is the simple exercise detailed in this monograph. Although you can read the full text of the experiment at amorconline.com, the basic steps are:
- Sit or lie down with straight posture, hands on knees and feet slightly apart.
- Close your eyes and start taking deep breaths.
- When you start feeling a tingling sensation in your feet, attempt to reproduce this feeling upwards across the other extremities of your body, saving the upper part of your chest for last.
- Once you’re able to concentrate the tingling sensation into this area, start chanting with an elongated “EHM”
- Repeat about 7 times, holding each time for as long as possible.
- Once you’re finished with the exercise, focus on the mental and physical effects produced in your body.
According to Rosicrucian Order AMORC, diligent practice of this ritual should stimulate the thymus gland of your chest. Apparently, this gland is critical to astral projection as it allows the psychic body to extend from your physical body along a metaphysical “silver cord.”
Examining the Provenance of the Silver Cord Theory
William Walker Atkinson and Yogi Ramacharaka
Although the monograph makes no mention of it, the idea of silver cord which links the body’s psychic form to its physical reality isn’t solely confined to the teachings of the Rosicrucian order.
In 1904, a mysterious occult figure known as Yogi Ramacharaka gained renown amongst mystic circles as the author of a much-heralded tome on yogic philosophy called Hatha Yoga. This book, and the 13 that followed it up to the year 1909, detailed in length esoteric aspects of Oriental occult belief, Hinduism, Christianity and the long-lost art of “psychic healing.”
If you’re wondering how an ascetic Yogi from India managed to pass down years of accumulated knowledge to a publishing agency in Chicago, then it’s prudent to mention that this information seems to have been relayed through a devoted student of Ramacharaka known as Baba Bharata. Apparently, Bharata came to America in 1893 to attend Chicago’s world famous World’s Fair. According to retellings of the story, Bharata had been deputized by the Yogi to spread his teaching far and wide, lest his wisdom should perish with him.
In Chicago, Bharata is said to have met up with an enterprising author by the name of William Walker Atkinson, a man who would later become known as the father of the New Thought movement. It is then Atkinson who is said to have acted as a scribe, recounting in pious detail the complex spiritual theories and insights of the Yogi. Fittingly, the books were then published under Ramacharaka name.
Unfortunately, no mention of Bharata or Ramacharaka can be found anywhere in the annals of history. This is despite the fact that the former is said to have made an appearance before U.S parliament upon his arrival in America, and the latter is said to have been a religious scholar of much renown across the Far East. That leaves us with Atkinson as the sole author of these fanciful tomes, and in light of the author’s later works, it seems quite clear that Yogi Ramacharaka was nothing but a pseudonym, used to add greater credibility to Atkinson’s own theories.
Interestingly enough, one of the theories printed under the Ramacharaka alias makes clear mention of the silver thread theory, expounded upon in this very experiment:
“The Astral Body is always connected with the physical body (during the life of the latter) by a thin silk-like, astral thread, which maintains the communication between the two. Were this cord to be severed the physical body would die, as the connection of the soul with it would be terminated….”
If you feel this is a somewhat tenuous link, then we shall take our silvery threat one step further. In 1929, an American esotericist by the name of Sulvan Muldoon further elaborated upon Atkinson’s theory of the silvery-thread. In his book “Projection of the Astral Body”, he gave detailed accounts of the numerous out-of-body experiences he had experienced over various periods of his life.
In these accounts, Muldoon gave in-depth scientific sounding information about the duration and characteristics of these OBEs. Amongst the salient features mentioned was a “silver cord” of about 1-1/2 inches which connected the astral body, to the physical body.
It’s important to note, that Muldoon was a sickly man, who was often left in debilitated condition, unable to move due to the inherent weaknesses of his body. His medical condition often made itself apparent in the form of intense cardiac activity which just so happened to coincide with many of his astral projections. Throughout Muldoon’s life, his astral projections ceased at two intervals in his life. At first, when he was prescribed medication to resolve his intense palpitations, and later on when his health improved and his conditions disappeared of their own accord.
When we consider the similarities between Muldoon’s tragic afflictions and Atkinson’s fantastical theories, it seems difficult to reconcile Rosicrucian Order AMORC’s teachings as being wholly unique, or exclusive. While we’ll be examining the scientific explanations behind OBEs in later analyses and anatomies, at this stage, it seems at least somewhat prudent to exercise some skepticism towards Rosicrucian Order AMORC’s claims.
